Macro Organizing
Macro organizing at its essence is broad categorization.
Notice that there is a single container that contains all types of crayon colors. The crayon “home” is a single round tin and all the crayon colors are mixed together.
Macro organizing is best for a styling preference of general collections and minimal containers.
Micro Organizing
Micro organizing at its essence is detailed categorization.
Notice that there are multiple small bins contained within the larger box. The crayon “home” is mostly designated by its general color and shade, and crayon colors are separated.
Micro organizing is best for a styling preference of specific collections and clear boundaries.
Selecting macro or micro organizing
In deciding whether to choose macro or micro organizing, here are some questions to consider. Keep in mind that you might prefer macro organizing for some items and micro organizing for other items.
When you must tidy up, which style are you most motivated to maintain?
Which style do you find most joyful to look at?
Which style encourages use of these items and makes it easy to use them?
Are you transporting the containers when using it or are you selecting items and leaving the container in its place?
What’s your budget for containers? (Please note that you could easily use what you already have around the home and spend zero dollars).
How much space do you want to dedicate to these items? (In general, more containers requires more space).
